Looks like the Roosters might lose Martin Kennedy during Origin after all. According to AAP (via the Herald Sun last week):
MAL Meninga has challenged young props Martin Kennedy and Josh McGuire to prove they’re good enough to replace Petero Civoniceva in the Queensland State of Origin front-row this year…
…Sydney Roosters’ Kennedy, 23, and Brisbane’s McGuire, 22, are two of the main contenders to succeed Civoniceva.
“Josh and Marty Kennedy are good young players and have a chance now and it’s up to them,” he said.
“We also still have Benny Hannant who was very good for us last year…”
Aaaah, Benny Hannant. The one that got away.
At any rate, looks like Kennedy is back in line following a severe ankle injury in 2011 which saw a slow return to form at the back-end of 2012. I’d hazard a guess and say that McGuire is the most likely to succeed Petrol Seventycentsalitre, if only because of his Brisbane connections, but if the Roosters start hot you never know.
If he makes it that means we’ll probably get a closer look at Kane Evans, if Trent Robinson does indeed wait until the origin rounds to start the rookie. Rumours are he might start off the bench in round 1. We’ll see in 30 days.
