Roosters squad named for trial vs Sea Eagles — no Symonds: on the outs for LO’D?

The list the Roosters have named for the trial in Gosford this weekend doesn’t detail positions so it’s hard to get a read on how they’ll play, but Sonny-Bill Williams hasn’t been named as expected, with his “debut” set for the Foundation Cup at Allianz the following week.

Michael Jennings has been named to make his debut as expected.

Interestingly, so has Anthony Cherrington who it has been widely expected will make way (i.e. be released or loaned out) for Luke O’Donnell. Tom Symonds, however, hasn’t been named which could suggest he is the one on the outer as the Roosters don’t want him getting injured before he leaves, jeopardising any detail for the LO’D.

We’ll have to wait and see regarding how they plan to play my man Roger Tuivasa-Sheck; my suspicion is that he and Minichiello will either swap positions during the game or play a half at fullback each, with one replacing the other at half-time. I doubt both will play at their run-on positions for the entire game but if they do that will give us an inkling on how coach Trent Robinson plans to play them this year i.e. if RTS remains on the wing all game, i’d expect that this is where he’ll play for 2013.

Here’s the squad:

Anthony Minichiello, Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, Henare Wells, Daniel Tupou, Adam Henry, Michael Oldfield, Usaia O’Sullivan, Michael Jennings, James Maloney, Daniel Mortimer, Samisoni Langi, Jake Friend, Nafe Seluini, Paul Rokolati, Tinarau Arona, Martin Kennedy, Sam Moa, Dylan Napa, Josh Ailaomai, Boyd Cordner, Frank Paul Nu’uausala, Mitchell Aubusson, Anthony Cherrington, Jack Siejka, Issac Liu.

UPDATE: Twitter user and fellow Roosters nut @Aman reliably informed me that Lama Tasi is still rehabbing from offseason surgery — he wasn’t named because of this, NOT because he is on the outer to potentially make way for Luke O’Donnell. I’ve updated the headline and above article from the previous version. Thanks @Aman!
