With regular captain Anthony Minichiello sidelined for up to three weeks with a hyperextended knee, the Roosters have elected to name Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and Boyd Cordner as stand-in co-captains for at least the next two matches.
The rise to captaincy for both players continues stellar seasons for both players, with Waerea-Hargreaves brushing aside a five-game suspension to lead the best defensive team in the competition and put himself in the conversation of the best front-rowers in the NRL. In the five games he was out, the Roosters conceded 99 points (19.8 points per game); in the 14 games he’s played, the Roosters have conceded just 116 points (8.3 ppg).
Meanwhile, the naming of Boyd Cordner, considered the favourite for the role long-term among Roosters fans, continues a meteoric rise for the 21-year-old. He played his first Origin game this year as well as representing Country, while in the past six weeks he has been in superb form, scoring eight tries in that span and running for over 100 metres in each of his past five matches.
Here is the statement from the Roosters:
With Club Captain Anthony Minichiello ruled out of Saturday night’s clash with the Raiders, Head Coach Trent Robinson has named Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and Boyd Cordner as fill in co-captains for the match.
The two players were announced earlier this season as vice-captains alongside Jake Friend and Mitchell Pearce.
It will be the first time both Cordner and Waerea-Hargreaves have captained the club.
